Sound Meditation

Headshot of Peggo Hodes in a green top with necklace.Sound Meditation calms your nervous system, slows down your breath, and connects you to the present moment. My goal is to use sounds that create a healing journey for each person. With a gong, chimes, crystal bowls, rain sticks, simple rhythm instruments, and my voice, I create a sonic environment that invites you to relax tension, relieve stress, and come home to your inner self. Each session is a unique response to the energy and needs of the people in the room.

I use the term Sound Meditation, rather than Sound Bath, because it articulates the two key elements of the experience – sound and meditation. In my practice, I use sound, vibration, and guided visualization to bring people to a meditative state that is relaxed and present. In the process, all the disparate energies of body and mind return to their natural state of union. Participants feel whole again.

How Sound Meditation Works

All the cells in our body function through vibration. Healthy cells vibrate with the coherent frequencies of their functional design. As we know, life can cause stress and contraction in the body, from our mental thoughts to tight muscles pulling on organs and bones, right down to the cellular level. The process whereby cells and systems with disparate rhythmic patterns begin to vibrate in sync is called entrainment. The body prefers coherence. When coherent vibration sounds in proximity to a system with static in the signal, cells begin to entrain to the coherent vibration. Some common examples include sports, play, dancing, and singing in a chorus. In nature, circadian rhythm entrainment synchronizes an organism’s internal biological clock to the external signals of light and temperature.

Tightness and contraction begin to let go. Muscles relax causing pain to ease, even abate. Stressful thoughts in the mind and emotions soften their grip. The breath and heart slow down. Our whole system begins to entrain to the vibration of coherence and wholeness. Studies have shown that an hour-long sound meditation can help people reduce tension, anger, fatigue, anxiety, and depression while increasing a sense of spiritual well-being.

We start by preparing the body and mind to open to the experience.  As the sounds expand and unfold, the whole system also expands and unfolds. Stuck places loosen, restoring healthy, coherent energy to our emotions, thoughts, and bodies. We come home to ourselves.
